I had to be in my first life as Elijah! When you're average, you have to work three times harder than everyone else just to keep up! I still had time to daydream though, when I walked to school... ... And end up tripping over my own feet.

I don't think Elijah "gradually" grew into it, though. The people around her were lost, staring into space, without any drive or dreams. They went through the motions of "being alive" without really "living". A flower could sprout up between the cracks of the pavement and the only person who'd crouch down to see its fragile, brief life was her. So I think she was naturally rebellious for having a dream in the first place!
[ elijah was, after all, the whole reason malkuth is who she is now. though her first life is a closed book... a tale forgotten by all save those who died with her... there's still so much that she shares with that determined, idealistic young woman. and even if malkuth feels distanced from elijah, that she's too different after her deaths and experiences, she does know that's true.
