[ he says as he's already leaving the venue. it's a long drive, so it'll take him a few hours to actually get back into the city. but, it was worth it not to have to fly... that said, brb. he's going to video call him from outside of the house right around 9.

for what it's worth, tobari does ♥ rafayel's last message to indicate that he read it, even though he has nothing else to add to the conversation. he's more of a slack emoji thumbs up type of person normally but he'll be a little softer since rafayel is clearly suffering so much being away.

tobari goes about the rest of his evening. he meets with his old coworkers for dinner. it never stops at dinner with them but he explains he has to take a call at 9 and ignores all their questions about what the call is for. they've already moved on to perhaps their second bar of the night, and tobari makes sure everyone has water before stepping out at 8:55. the street's still busy and there's probably both muffled music and the sound of nightlife bustling in the background. despite everything, this is still where he's most comfortable.

dutifully, he'll pick up before the fourth ring. ]

Hey. [ ....? tilts head? is rafayel outside? ] Headed somewhere?

[ i was going to say not a thumbs up, and the fact you had to explain that is taking me out

still, rafayel can feel an excitement bubbling in his chest at the thought of being able to see tobari soon. while it may have only been a few days on paper, it ends up feeling much longer for him. for example, he can't help but wondering if tobari is thinking of him as much as he does. or what he's eating, or... how much he's eating? he's not doing that weird thing where he eats lunch and breakfast at the same time, is he...?

either way, he tries not to get too derailed, even if these are all fair questions in his mind. instead, he focuses on the person on the other end of the line. or well, he busts through the door and yells on the camera and in person: ] I'm home, cutie! [ ... and the house is dark and no one is home?

he looks back to his phone screen and ... IS TOBARI OUTSIDE??? HELLO? ]

it's not the right answer, but he's laughing. he can already imagine the headache that this is about to be considering how goddamn dramatic rafayel is about everything, but he can't help it. but this is so insanely stupid, but also so unbelievably cute, that he's covering his face and laughing so hard that passerbys are looking at him strangely. oh he's about to be in so much trouble, but he's so endeared. ]

[ tobari's already on the move, the scenery behind him reflecting the neon lights of bar signs and his voice distantly talking to someone else 'i'm leaving! close my tab!' before he's briskly walking his way through the throngs of people still just starting their night.

he could say that rafayel was at a literal fancyass exhibition to display his art, which is such an insanely rich and posh thing that tobari still can't believe is a real job, but he's trying to not sleep on the couch tonight and he's already dug a hole for himself (somehow? how was he supposed to know rafayel would do this?)

so instead he's just honest, ]

Why would I be at the house? It's not home if you're not there.

i don't think tobari would ever drive a real car. he's finding where he parked his motorcycle and grabbing his helmet. ]

it's is kind of hard to still act upset when it's clear that tobari is in such a rush to make it home. in spite of himself, he does smile a little on the screen, and he can't help but be grateful that tobari looks a bit too busy to notice. ]
